Edmund's Oast Review

I can’t say I’ve had such excitement building for a new restaurant in Charleston in well, never. Places come and go here, and I don’t typically become an emotional wreck fretting over such a blaise affair. However, when the titans of Charleston beer have been working on a place for almost (according to Rich-a year and half) one must marvel at the sorts of items they’ll offer.

There has been an inordinate amount of positive press and tons of glowing reviews coming from the soft opening that occurred the few days before Valentines Day. We pulled up to the ever-burgeoning North Morrison (No’Mo I’m told) area. We found a large parking lot, adjacent to the joint. Very easy in and out.

Review of Bohemian Bull Tavern & Beer Garden

As James Island residents for going on a year now, and travelers of the various islands in Charleston for over a decade, I’ve often thought James Island was lacking in the foodie department. I think places like Heart, Monodos, or Smokey Oak did a adequate job at improving this issue. However the Bohemian Bull might have captured a couple of niche markets nicely.

Upon walking up to the restaurant, there is a cool open-air bar. Greeted by several friendly ladies. I was asked where I’d like to sit, inside at either the rather spacious wooden bar, inside at the tables, or outside. I chose outside. Upon walking through, you get a instant idea of the aesthetic the owners were going for. It is very rustic, yet James Island, all the whole fitting neatly into the blue-collar feel of the adjacent commercial property. The outside area is by far the selling point of this place. It includes a full-sized bocce court, cornhole, firepit, nice benches with warmers, and a large space to drink their selection of beer.

We grabbed beers from the bar, a Coast Smoked Porter and a Evil Twin Falco IPA. Both beers were available in the 10 oz. or 16 oz. format. This was appreciated, and there did not seem to be a mark-up for the less commercially desirable 10 oz. serving. The pint selection was derived from 32 taps, which consisted of roughly 2/3 featuring local South Carolina breweries. The beers were served in local glassware. The bar featured a healthy liquor selection, with some interesting pitchers of moonshine and smoked bourbon for pouring. Also of note was a substantial bottle/can list, which featured several large format options for beer. I would honestly say they had more local beer (Frothy, Westbrook, Coast, and Holy City) on tap than anywhere I can recall. I felt they had a good sense of the importance of delineating beer by style as their board was split into 5 major styles. Their ABV were not listed on the board, something I would consider adding.  All the beers served tasted fresh and delicious. I continued my big sour kick of late and had a Rodenbach Grand Cru.  It was super tasty as usual. My wife tried the Holy City Pecan Dream. She said it was a bit sweet for her taste, but I tried it and liked it.
Click here to check out the draft offerings and here to check out the bottled/canned beer selection.

The menu was focused and fit the James Island crowd. Major choices included a “Build your Burger” with a bevy of interesting toppings. Some interesting house choices included a “Breakfast Burger” with maple sausage, syrup, and eggs atop a fresh, ground in-house beef burger cooked to temperature. Choices ranged in size and interest, and prices ranged from $5-$20. We ordered the Boho Eggs, which were some nice and neat portion of 5 deviled eggs made with truffle oil, bacon, onions amongst other things. They were delicious and hit the spot! Very clean taste. For lunch we split the fried chicken sandwich served with some delicious friend okra and a Folly cheese steak served with fried mac n’ cheese. Both meals were spot on in taste and price. The steak was slightly burnt around the edges, but did not detract from the great flavors of the cheesesteak. My friend stated his chicken sandwich was very enjoyable and was extremely pleased with the whole pieces of fried okra served on the side.

I spoke to the manager, Andrew, who is fresh to Charleston (2 weeks removed from a move from Philadelphia). He stated that the bar wanted to focus on serving the freshest beers from the closest breweries possible. He said this notion was extended into their food offerings, as many of the ingredients are locally sourced. He said they already sold out of their Frothy Beard offerings and that the initial excitement for the place was exciting. He stated that on Tuesday, November 13th they will be hosting the Freehouse Brewery opening party, after their retail release party. Kudu...Revisited!

Recently, the wifey and I went downtown to check out the changes that have taken place at one of our favorite places to go for craft beer and/or coffee.  If you haven't been to Kudu Coffee and Craft Beer, then you need to get your @$$ there soon because you're missing out!  I wrote a post on Kudu awhile back, and you can check that out here...or just keep scrolling down.  Since I already did a write up, this is just an update on what has changed since the last time I was there.   Here it goes. They used to have 4 beers on tap, now they have expanded to 22.  That is one hell of an expansion!  Good Work! I like it!  Beers are top notch too!

New Craft Beer Establishments Coming to Charleston Area!

Picture is from the Facebook Account of Bohemian Bull Tavern & Beer Garden

I just heard that Jack's Cosmic Dogs will be closing it's location on Folly Road in James Island.  At first read, I thought "this sucks!" Then I kept reading, and saw that the owners are closing the hot dog joint so they can open a craft beer joint in the same location!  "This sucks" quickly turned into "kick @$$!"  Their new venture will be called Bohemian Bull Tavern and Beer Garden.  The owners are expecting to open sometime this fall.  Their website provides a few hints at what we can expect, such as "hand-spanked burgers," "meaty wings," "hearty pub grub", "whiskey bar", "lawn games", "live music", and drum roll please........ "over 100 drafts, crafts, bottles & cans!"  Music to my ears! Sounds like this is gonna be another great establishment us craft beer lovers can flock to.  In addition, be on the lookout for these other establishments to be opening soon: Edmund's Oast, Carolina Ale House, and Bay Street Biergarten.

Any new craft beer related establishments that I forgot to mention?

Cheers!

Closed For Business....Please Stay Open Forever!!!

Memorial Day weekend, the wifey and I decided to throw one back at Closed For Business Draught Emporium .  If you don't already know, it is located at 453 KingStreet, in downtown Charleston.  This was the wifey's second time at C4B, and my first.  While on our way to the Apple store, the wifey had wanted us to stop in to C4B so that she could show me how awesome this place was.  I certainly did not argue.  In my head, it was definitely Beer Thirty!  Plus, I knew this place had 42 taps of good quality craft beer to choose from and was voted "Best Beer Selection on Tap" by the Charleston City Paper in March 2011.  The wifey knew that this is definitely my kind of place.  When we walked in, I was greeted with a visually appealing restaurant, with a fine selection of beers, and food that smelled damn good.  I am glad Closed For Business was OPEN!   Check out some pics of the place.

With not much intention of eating, we ordered our beers (then got another sniff of the food and decided to look over the brunch menu).  Here is (most of) the beer menu.

What to pick?  What to pick?   We both decided to try different beers from Stevens Point Brewery (Wisconsin brewery).  I went with the Cascade Pale and the wifey went with the Nude Beach (she just liked the name I think).  Both were good, but we decided that mine was the better of the two.   A good solid beer, with a nice hop aroma.  Not as bitter as I was hoping.  I am definitely a hop head.   In regards to the beer menu, I like how they separate the beers into categories such as Light, White/Fruit, Pale, Amber/Brown, and Dark.  This makes it much easier for a guy like me to find the beers that I like and don't like.   On this particular day, beers of note (that I really enjoy a lot) were: Allagash White, Coast Hop Art, Bear Republic Racer 5, Foothills Hoppyum, Stone IPA, Ballast Point Sculpin IPA, Oskar Blues Dale's Pale Ale, Westbrook Citra Rye Pale Ale, Palmetto Falconer's IPA, Ommegang Rare Vos, Highland Oatmeal Porter, and Ballast Point Sextant.   Many other quality beers as well.  I was highly, highly impressed and can't wait to go back.

On to the food (we couldn't resist ordering something since the food smelled so good).  It was Sunday, so we ordered from the Brunch menu.  I went with a sausage, egg and cheese and the wifey with the French Toast.  Two words for my sausage, egg and cheese.....Freaking Yummy!  The wifey liked her French Toast, but my sausage, egg, and cheese stole the show.  Check it out.

Other things that kick @$$ about C4B, is the fact that you can order 10oz, 16oz, or 1 Liter sized drafts.  On this day, I went for the pint.  But heck, another day I just might feel like bringing out the big guns and downing a pint of some Ommegang Rare Vos or some Ballast Point Sculpin IPA.  Maybe I'll even head over to Bed, Bath & Beyond if I have enough time (hopefully you have seen Old School and get this is a joke).   Also, the beer menu changes on a daily basis so they are always offering new,  great craft beers.

All in all, I loved Closed For Business and hope that it stays Open For Business for a long time.  I certainly plan on coming back very soon and putting down a liter of something delicious to my head.  Maybe even 2 liters!

Have you been to C4B?  What are your thoughts on this place?

Currently Drinking:  Homebrewed Black IPA (not too black, kinda brownish black but tastes pretty good)
