Palmetto Brewery Tasting Room Review

How sweet is Palmetto Brewery's new tasting room?  If you haven't been yet, you definitely have to get down there and check it out.  I was thoroughly impressed when I visited around the Christmas holiday.  Hold on... Let me back up a bit.

Palmetto Brewery, the oldest brewery in South Carolina, opened in 1993.  The owners came up with the idea while on a windsurfing trip to the Columbia River Gorge.  On their website, it says "while sipping beer from a local brewery during a windsurfing break, we decided Charleston deserved more than yellow fizzy beer - they deserved a brewery to call their own." I would say the guys were spot on.  The brewery is currently located in downtown Charleston, at 289 Huger Street (sandwiched between King and Meeting Streets).  I say currently, because they already have it in the works to re-locate to the Park Circle area of North Charleston in 2018.   The new brewery will be bigger, and enable them to grow and expand distribution.  The last that I heard, the current site of the brewery will be converted into apartments.  This is sad to hear, but I guess it would be kind of cool to live in a former brewery.  Conflicted.

Two Blokes Brewing Review

A Bloke. According to Google, a Bloke is a slang term for a man/guy/fellow. The earliest known usage is from the early 19th century. My question is what do you get if you put a two of these such Blokes together? You get a new brewery in Mt. Pleasant called Two Blokes Brewing. Two Blokes actually opened this past summer, and I'm wondering why it took me so long to check this place out.

Local Beer Review- Low Tide's Beach Blanket Winter Warmer Belgian Quad

Local Beer Review

Beach Blanket Winter Warmer Belgian Quad by Low Tide Brewing Company

I had the pleasure of tasting this beer at the Warehouse Bar and Kitchen on Tuesday, December 13th.  I started out with the 10oz., but after one sip, I knew a 16 oz. would soon be headed in my direction.  Low Tide named this brew perfectly as it wrapped me in rich, dark fruit flavors and spices.  True to Belgian styles, Low Tide's Quad had great texture and aroma.   This beer goes down smooth, so be prepared to handle the 11.5 ABV.

Interview with Twisted Cypress Brewing

I got a chance recently to chat with the guys from the guys from Twisted Cypress Brewing Company.  If you are  not familiar with the name, they are a new brewery coming to West Ashley hopefully by the end of the year.  Just check out the interview to learn more about these guys.

Recommended Charleston Brewery Tours

If you're anything like me, you love beer.  If you're anything like me, you love going to breweries to try their beer.  If you're anything like me, you love hitting up a few breweries in one day (safely of course).  Well this article is for you, if you are anything like me.  And if you're anything like me, you like to be efficient about your brewery touring.   Here are some suggestions for touring Charleston breweries that I'd like to provide, based on my own experience.

Brewery Tour 1-  The Mount Pleasant Pint Parade
This tour can be done either on a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, as these are the three days these breweries all have in common for their tasting rooms being open.   As the name implies, all three breweries are located in Mount Pleasant and they are all within 2 miles of each other.  Highlights of this tour could include BeerAdvocate.com's #1 South Carolina beer, Westbrook's Mexican Cake.

First Stop ===> Ghost Monkey Brewery.   Located at 522 Wando Lane in Mt. Pleasant.  Start at 4pm on Thursday and Friday, and 11am on Saturday.   I recommend a flight, and these are a few beers I enjoy: Red Herring, Farmer Brown, Lemon Basil IPA, and Cup o JoJo.

Second Stop ===> Two Blokes Brewing.  Located at 547 Long Point Rd. Suite 101 in Mt. Pleasant (only 1/2 mile down the road from Ghost Monkey).  I recommend a few 4oz tasters or a pint of one of these: Liquid Lunch Pale Ale, Drone Honey Rye IPA, or the Planet of the Apricots Wheat (gotta love the name).

Third Stop ===>  Westbrook Brewing.  Located at 510 Ridge Road in Mt. Pleasant (only 1.5 miles from Two Blokes).  So if it's Thursday or Friday, you gotta know they close at 7pm, and on Saturdays at 4pm.  I recommend these beers: Mexican Cake (or any of the variants), IPA, One Claw Rye Pale Ale, Margarita Gose, and the Two Claw Rye IPA.  If you get there close to their last call, or don't have a DD, then you could always opt for either a growler fill to go, a six pack to go, or one of their 22 oz. bombers to go.  Time to stock up!

Pro Tip: If you like staying out late, flip the script, and start at Westbrook since they close the earliest.  You're welcome.

Brewery Tour 2- The Norcharleston Sip and Swig

Like the Mount Pleasant Pint Parade, this three brewery tour can be done on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. This tour of North Charleston breweries will take you to very well established breweries, with really good beer.   You'll have the opportunity to taste a few beers that are Great American Beer Festival medal winners (Holy City's Pluff Mud Porter and their Washout Wheat)

First Stop ===> Coast Brewing.  Located  at 1250 N 2nd Street in North Charleston.  You can start here on Thursdays and Fridays at 4pm, or 11am on a Saturday.  A few of their beers I recommend are:  Boy King Double IPA, 32/50 Kolsch, and the Dead Arm Pale Ale.  I would recommend getting a sampler so you can try four different beers.  Also, they sell 6 packs to go, so look out for their Hop Art IPA, Boy King Double IPA, 32/50 Kolsch, Dead Arm Pale Ale, and Blackbeerd Imperial Stout

Second Stop ===> Holy City Brewing. Located at 4155 C Dorchester Rd. in North Charleston.  Holy City Brewing has a few Great American Beer Festival medals under their belt, which is quite impressive.  In 2012, their Pluff Mud Porter took home a Gold Medal, and in 2014 the Washout Wheat took home a Bronze Medal.  I would recommend a few half pints of these two.  Other notable beers are their Yeast Wrangler Double IPA, Chucktown Follicle Brown Ale, and Holy City Pilsner.

Third Stop ===> Freehouse Brewery.  Located at 2895 Pringle Street Suite B in North Charleston.   My favorite beers from Freehouse are usually their Saisons and Farmhouse Ales.  Luckily for you, they usually have them for sale by the bottle to enjoy at home.  Other recommendations are their Folly's Pride Blonde and Green Door IPA.  Perhaps try a pint of one of these, and grab one of their bottled options to go.

Pro Tip:  All three of these breweries sell packaged beer, so bring a cooler with ice and stock up on a bunch of good beer.

Brew Tour 3- The Downtown Drink It Down
This tour features three breweries that are located in the City of Charleston, and within close proximity.  This tour can be done on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday.  On Thursday and Friday, you can start the tour at 3pm, and Saturday at 1pm.

First Stop ===> Palmetto Brewing Company.  Located at 289 Huger Street in Charleston.  This brewery boasts a beautiful tasting room as well as it's the oldest brewery operating in the Charleston area.  Check out some of their artifacts from Charleston breweries dating back from the late 1800's and early 1900's. I would recommend starting this tour with a pint, or perhaps a few half pints.  Recommended beers are their Pale Ale, Espresso Porter, and Homefront IPA.

Second Stop ===> Revelry Brewing.  Located at 10 Conroy Street in Charleston, and only 1/2 mile from Palmetto Brewing.  Revelry just opened up a brand new roof top bar, so be sure to check this out.  I would recommend a flight, and here our a few of my favorites you may want to include in your tasting:  Funkmaster Brett &The Furious Hops, Lefty Loosey IPA, and Poke The Bear.  If they have it, I recommend grabbing a bottle of their Jackson With Peach to go.

Third Stop ===> Cooper River Brewing.  Located at 2201-B Mechanic St. in Charleston, and less than a mile and a half from Revelry.  Cooper River offers their beers in 5 oz sample glasses, half a pint, or full pints.  I would recommend trying a few 5 oz samples. My favorites are their Stout, Porter (Nitro version), and Scottish Red Ale.

Pro Tip: Edmund's Oast is located close to all three of these breweries, and is a can't miss for great food and great beer.  They brew their own, as well as have one of the best draft beer selections in the Charleston area.  Perhaps head there for dinner after your brew tour.

Holy Charleston Breweries!

I started this website/blog a little more than 5 years ago, back in May 2011.  I started the site because of my love for Charleston, love of craft beer, and that I wanted to document the growth of the craft beer scene.

Tradesmen Brewing Sneak Peak!

Tradesman Brewing is Coming!

The craft beer craze is slowly creeping its way onto James Island! In the past year, we’ve seen a craft beer bar open (Bohemian Bull) and another one on the way (The Barrel). This has left some wondering, when will JI get an equally badass brewery taboot?

Edmund's Oast Review

I can’t say I’ve had such excitement building for a new restaurant in Charleston in well, never. Places come and go here, and I don’t typically become an emotional wreck fretting over such a blaise affair. However, when the titans of Charleston beer have been working on a place for almost (according to Rich-a year and half) one must marvel at the sorts of items they’ll offer.

There has been an inordinate amount of positive press and tons of glowing reviews coming from the soft opening that occurred the few days before Valentines Day. We pulled up to the ever-burgeoning North Morrison (No’Mo I’m told) area. We found a large parking lot, adjacent to the joint. Very easy in and out.

Post Brewvival Top 10 and Pics!

This 2014 Charleston Brewvival was the best yet in my opinion.  Cheers to Coast Brewing and the guys from Charleston Beer Exchange for putting together a kick @$$ event at a time when they are busier than ever with the recent opening of Edmund's Oast and Coast's expansion.  Less than 365 days until Brewvival 2015.  Let the countdown begin.  Prior to Brewvival we posted our Brewvival top 10 beers we were most interested in sampling.  After sampling them all and many others, these are the top 10 we enjoyed the most!

A Review in Honor of a Few Bozos Opening a Restaurant

A Review in Honor of a Few Bozos Opening a Restaurant

We’ve been sitting on a few beer reviews for a while now, and, in honor of Edmund’s Oast opening this Friday, we thought we’d break the fast with a review of Evil Twin’s Bozo Beer.  Bozo Beer is a collaboration or at least was inspired by Rich and Scott of The Charleston Beer Exchange/Edmund’s Oast.  In addition, it was brewed at our very own Westbrook Brewing Company. It’s a big @$$ Imperial Stout clocking in at 17.2% ABV.  The label is Jeppe's classic triangular pixelated dude(s)-involved-in-the-brewing-process (and guess who this one features?). The myriad of ingredients/characteristics mentioned on the label is enough to send a chill through a Cicerone’s spine. They include molasses, lactose, chocolate, almond, hazelnut, vanilla bean, cinnamon, oak spiral, chili, marshmallow, muscovado sugar, chestnut, and coffee.

Freehouse Brewery Review

Last Wednesday, the Low Country Libations homebrew club held our monthly meeting at Freehouse Brewery in North Charleston.  Freehouse is owned by Arthur Lucas, who was manning the tasting room on this particular evening.  The location is real nice, as it is located on banks of the Ashley River.  There is a nice deck for enjoying some beers and checking out the view of the river.

Unnamed Saison- A Frothy Beard and Charleston Craft Beer Collaboration Beer!

A few weeks before Christmas break, our friends from The Frothy Beard Brewing Company asked if we wanted to do a collaboration beer.  Damn right we do!!!  So we got together just before Christmas
and hashed out a recipe over some Frothy Beer.  We decided we would brew a Saison, and because Frothy had recently received some Persimmons (it's a fruit), we figured we might as well use the Persimmons in some way to make this beer unique.  Perhaps it will be EPIC!!!

Crafty Draught Charleston Review

I just got home from the just opened Crafty Draught in Mt. Pleasant.  They opened their doors for the 1st time at noon today, and I found myself in their neck of the woods just a few minutes before noon.  Feeling a bit scrooged from way too much Christmas shopping, the wifey read my mind and suggested the best way to snap me out of my "bah-hum-bug" moment was to stop by Crafty Draught for a quick pint.  She was reading my mind, as it was just what I needed.

Review of Westbrook Brewing Dark Helmet Rye Schwarzbier

If there’s one thing Westbrook Brewing does well, it’s building up anticipation for their offerings. A significant portion of their portfolio is seasonal/annual release, and there is no shortage of Westbrookians (yeah, I just made that up) that spend the year waiting for his/her favorite. Dark Helmet is one of those beers. It’s an annual release that locals go nuts for when it’s around.

Good Times at The Frothy Beard Brewing Company

This weekend, we had a family outing to The Frothy Beard Brewing Company.  Well, we actually went to Magnolia Plantation first and managed to incorporate into our trip a good ol' visit with the bearded brewers at Frothy Beard.   The wifey did not put up a fight, as she likes to indulge in a good locally brewed craft beer or two as well.

Westbrook Brewing Gose Review

Gose (pronounced “GOES-uh”) is a German style sour whitbier brewed with coriander and salt.  First brewed in the early 16th century, its popularity waned and it almost went extinct after World War II (apparently that can happen if no one bothers to write down the recipe).  Today gose is alive and kicking in the Lowcountry thanks to the always creative and historically appreciative minds over at Westbrook.
